Welcome to Garden City Learning Center

Garden City Learning Center is an international refugee school, open to students from all backgrounds and faiths. It will teach an American curriculum to secondary students (ages 13-18). The goal is to provide students with an education (and diploma) that will set them up for success in Malaysia and abroad.
5 Things that Make Garden City Special

1. Strategic Partnerships

There is a common proverb that reads, "It takes a village to raise a child." Likewise, Garden City Learning Center believes that education is a collaborative process, best shared by a team of committed people. Our school would not be possible without an amazing team of churches, businesses, schools, and NGOs.
At Garden City Learning Center, we parter with...

1. American and Malaysian Churches
to provide volunteers, resources, and a culture of compassion.
2. NGOs to provide expertise, develop programs, and offer various forms of support.
3. International Schools to provide educational resources, unique learning opportunities, and teacher training.

2. American Curriculum

If the American education system could be summed up in one word, it would be this: holistic. Holistic learning is an educational approach that focuses on developing the whole person—intellectually, emotionally, socially, physically, and spiritually. At Garden City, we aim to develop young leaders who can succeed in an increasingly complex 21st century work environment.
At Garden City Learning Center, students will...

1. Practice c
ritical thinking and problem-solving to help them navigate challenges, make informed decisions, and adapt to new environments with confidence.
2. Participate in experiential learning to provide hands-on, real-world experiences that build practical skills, confidence, and resilience.
3. Earn a GED certificate to provide them with a recognized credential that opens doors to higher education and better job opportunities in the future.

3. Values Based

What good is knowledge if it's not used to make the world better? At Garden City, we believe that learning should be accompanied by character building, so students are not just equipped with the content knowledge to make their life better, but with a desire to give back to their community.
At Garden City Learning Center, we focus on...

1. Service learning
to reinforce academic knowledge and instill a lifelong commitment to social responsibility.
2. Leadership skills by allowing students to take on responsibilities in group projects, organize events, and mentor peers.
3. Compassion to help students see challenges through others’ eyes and act with kindness and purpose to create a better world.

4. Technology Enhanced

Technology empowers Garden City students by providing them with access to global knowledge, digital skills, and innovative learning tools that can bridge socio-economic gaps. It also connects them to a world of opportunities, from online courses to mentorships, preparing them for a future in an increasingly digital world.
At Garden City Learning Center, we use...

1. Learning apps
like Kahn Academy, to help students access world-class education from their computers.
2. Digital literacy tools to prepare students for the 21st century workforce, helping students navigate and utilize the most common technology tools.
3. Collaborative learning tools, like iEARN and Google Docs, to help students not only improve collaboration skills, but also connect with peers around the world.

5. Data Driven

Data driven instruction allows us to develop learning plans to meet the specific needs of students. This is especially important in a refugee context where many students have experienced gaps in their learning. Data insights allow Garden City to identify the strengths and weaknesses of all our learners.
At Garden City Learning Center, we rely on...

1. Admissions testing
to ensure that our students are able to meet the demands of our curriculum, and it identify areas of growth for our newest students.
2. Quarterly updates to give parents a window into their child's learning progress.
3. Teacher training to ensure that everyone at Garden City is committed to improving!
